Ever Ask Why ?

Why was I made to hear Your voice
And enter while there’s room,
When thousands make a wretched choice
And rather starve than come?

It was the same love that spread the feast
That sweetly forced me in.
Else I had still refused to taste,
And perished in my sin”

–Isaac Watts

Every day, thousands – millions of people hear the gospel message (even when presented a bit distorted)…. and reject it. Some of them are wiser and smarter than you from an intellectual standpoint. Some of them are dumb as bricks.

You ever wonder what makes you and the person who stood next to you, heard the same gospel message, knows the same information as you…. what makes you say ‘Okay, I’m in trouble with God. I need to repent and trust in His Son’ while the other person turns and says ‘I don’t need Christ, I’ll make my own way.’

Have you ever contemplated this thought ?

At the root level, every true believer, when pushed (some of us need that push) will not ascribe anything to themselves other than simply being changed by God in order to believe. Deep down….we know. We know that it wasn’t that we were smarter, it wasn’t that we knew more, it wasn’t that we were anything better than the person next to us…… it was because GOD did something inside of us so that once we were blind, but now we see, even if we can’t fully explain what has happened to us.

Many of the debates over supposed ‘free will’ in the body of Christ all crumble when they get to this point… and every true believer all begin to sound the same. We who truly love Christ know our state prior to salvation and that nothing short of God changing our heart and opening our eyes could have us turn to Him.

God gave a wonderful promise in the Old Testament time and time again on how He would deal with those whom He set His love on.

“I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.” (Jeremiah 32:40).

This verse is pregnant with theology. But in the simplest terms, the reason you chose Christ is because He made you willing to choose Him. He made your eyes to see His beauty, whereas before, they could not and were blind to spiritual truth. He opened your understanding so that the gospel made sense to you and you saw your condition before Him. He broke your heart so that you now see the heinousness of your sin before Him and felt conviction over it and turned from it to Him.

There is much more I could say here, but take some time and thank God today for the glorious salvation He provided. It is because God chose to save you, that you chose to believe when the gospel was presented to you. It was because God placed His spirit in you to fear Him that you did so and do so now. And it is because of His promises here, Phil. 1:6 and a host of other passages, that both you who truly believe will not turn from Him and He will preserve and keep you (Eph. 4:30, John 10:27-29).

Now if you’ve not given this much thought, I invite you to take a listen to the gospel message afresh here:

Soli Deo Gloria,
